Olga is 25 years old at the time of the crime and has 2 sons (2 and 5 years old). Since late 2021 she has been with Elchin from Azerbaijan, who is 11 years older and is not the father of the children. However, she seems to be in a relationship with Andrej (39 years old) from Kazakhstan. He lives in the neighboring village and also has two sons.

Possibly Olga and Elchin are also divorced and Andrej is the new boyfriend, the matter is unclear.

In the early morning of June 18, 2022, Elchin gains access to the bedroom and kills his rival with an axe. He then kidnaps Olga and the children in the victim's car. However, he is caught at a police check in Rinteln (Lower Saxony), yanks open the car door and flees. Olga tipped off the police officers about the murder and led them to the corpse in her flat.

It was later said that the perpetrator was already in custody in Azerbaijan - for murder.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.
wants to end the relationship.
was the victim of rape or sexual assault.
was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
